Big Basin Redwoods State Park
Big Basin Redwoods is the oldest state park in California, but the trees within the park are much older. One of the first things you see when you get out of your car, mounted right next to the visitor center, is a huge cross-section of a redwood that began life in 544, during the Byzantine Empire. Tacked to the tree’s rings are placards listing important historical milestones, showing you how big the tree was during each.
Brandon and I hiked the Berry Creek falls trail, about 11 miles round trip. It’s one of the longer hikes in my guidebook. A nice change from the previous hike, the scenery was almost completely wooded and dark. The three waterfalls were a treat in the middle of the hike.
