I'd like to know why you think #1 is a myth. Even in low power mode, a computer that is on is still using a lot more energy than when it is in sleep mode or off. This page says that a 20" iMac G5 uses 97 watts when doing nothing, and 62 watts when the monitor is sleeping (presumably the computer's lowest energy state). If you put it into sleep mode the total power consumed is only 3.5 watts!

Actually shutting off the LCD monitor is actually less crucial, because it can go into a very low power mode. In this mode (when the power light is blinking but the display is not on) my monitor uses less than 5W of power vs. 1W for completely off; that's hardly a difference.

I think it's a myth that shutting the computer off saves a considerable amount over putting it to sleep. This is clearly not true, as the energy savings is only on the order of 5W for a laptop or desktop.

#1 in an incorrect myth. Although leaving an LCD on takes up over twice as much power as leave a computer on 24/7. And you don't wanna even know about CRTs.

I think so. Two of mine just died, so when I remember I'm going to visit the service desk and ask.

Update: I was able to get two fluorescent bulbs at the Sue B service desk. I'm told that they are also available at the Quad office and all the other area offices.

Great list! Number 10 is my favorite; it's so easy to let ourselves think that we can't really do anything about climate change or any of the other environmental problems.

But if everyone just turned off lights and took shorter showers as well as encouraging other people or leading by example, tons of resources could be conserved.

It's nice to know that people are truly concerned about the environment.
